Sunday, June 26, 2009 - Grand Tour of the George & Isabel Whitney Estate

"You were invited to come and see what's behind the walls!"

For years I daily drove by the home hidden behind the walls on north-west corner of 16th Street and San Antonio Avenue, Upland.   You know, the one where there is a drinking fountain right on the corner for thirsty walkers !!   I had the good fortune to visit this home early in 2008 to work with Isabel Whitney on her genealogy.

The AB Whitney family moved here in 1916.  At that time, the only building on the property was an old barn.  The current house was designed by
Myron Hunt, who also designed the Huntington Mansion and Library in San Marino, Los Angeles County, California.

Over 300 visitors toured this Mediterranean-style villa that features the architecture of Myron Hunt.  They also enjoyed the gardens, fountains, patios.  It even has a tree-house!   All visitore received a complimentary booklet about the history of the home and the Whitney family.   Most of the areas and the home are wheelchair accessible.
